Wisdom Teeth Removal: What To Expect
Wisdom teeth (third molars) show up on your dental X-rays when you're in your mid-teens. You will know your wisdom teeth are coming through when you start to notice pain, infections, cyst formation or gum inflammation.
When your wisdom teeth have to come out, it’s usually because they are impacted, the teeth have come through in at a wrong angle or there is not enough space in your mouth for the tooth to come out properly. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed in their late teenage years.
Dr. Kam Patel, one of Chicago's leading oral surgeons, can remove (extract) your wisdom teeth/tooth in as little as fifteen minutes. The procedure can be done in either of the OMS surgeries- in Lakeview or Downtown. Oral surgeons are more skilled and efficient at removing wisdom teeth, therefore less risk of post operative complications.
Before removing your wisdom teeth/tooth, Dr. Kam Patel will give you a general anesthetic. A general anesthetic is highly recommended to make the experience easier. To remove the wisdom tooth, Dr. Kam Patel will raise the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. He will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth.
Post recovery after having your wisdom teeth removed is about 5-7 days, being fully functional after the first day with careful pain management. For the first 4 days after surgery, a diet of liquids and soft foods are highly recommended. After 4 days you can resume your regular diet.
