Wisdom teeth removal is the majority of Dr. Patel’s clinical practice. All four wisdom teeth are typically removed under IV general anesthesia, with the total time for the procedure at typically 45 minutes. This involves checking in, going through post-operative instructions, performing the procedure and a recovery period prior to going home.
Impacted wisdom teeth removal may be performed under local anesthesia but sedation is preferred.
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and grow into the mouth. The majority of wisdom teeth remain impacted and need removal. Poorly positioned wisdom teeth are responsible for crowding of your regular teeth. They have a greater tendency to develop cysts and tumors. When they are impacted against the teeth in front they have a greater tendency to cause decay in your regular teeth. There is also increased risk of infection developing around these teeth.
Dr. Patel prefers a consultation visit prior to extraction of all impacted wisdom teeth.
In addition to impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Patel frequently works with area orthodontists to expose regular teeth that have not fully erupted to aid in their eruption.
